10 Facts About The Eero Aarnio Ball Chair by Regency Shop

The Eero Aarnio ball chair continues to grow in popularity! Do you know when and why the chair was designed? What its nickname is? What the shell is made out of? Check out these facts to learn more about the ball chair.

• Eero Aarnio designed the ball chair in 1966. This unconventional shaped chair made its first appearance at the International Furniture Fair in Cologne. Design experts refer to the ball chair as a work of furniture and architecture. The first ball chair remains in Aarnio's home.
• The ball chair has been nicknamed as the globe chair . Eero literally used a ball shape form, cut a portion of it and attached it at the base. The chair has also been referred to as a "room within a room" because of its cozy and relaxing atmosphere.
• Eero Aarnio designed the ball chair because he was in need of a big comfortable chair! He and his wife had moved into their first home and didn't have a chair that he could relax in or do his free-lancing in. After some initial sketching, Aarnio tacked the drawing onto a wall and his wife outlined his head as he sat on a chair against the wall. He then created his first prototype!
• Molded fiberglass is used to create the shell of the ball chair. The dimensions are 120" by 105". Most ball chairs have a white shell, but black is becoming a popular choice as well.
• The cushions come in all sorts of colors. You can choose from basic colors, such as brown, blue or green, or go bold with a hot pink, bright orange or a sharp red.
• Ball chairs typically range from $1,000 to several thousand dollars. The chair can be purchased at a high-end furniture store, or on-line. Shipping charges, delivery policies, and refund policies may differ from store to store.
• A high quality material, such as imported wool fabric, or leather, is used for the upholstery. The cushions can be removed which is helpful should something be spilled on them. The stitching is of exceptional work.
• The interior measurements of the ball chair are 47"Hx41"Wx30"D. The spacious room provides added comfort. The chair provides a feeling of security, yet you don't feel confined or closed in.
• The ball chair has an optional built-in sound system. If you enjoy listening to music and don't want to be distracted by other sounds, such as car horns, the TV, etc., you'll love the surround sound feature!
• Another option is a matching ottoman for the ball chair. The base of the ottoman is the same white or black as the chair's shell and the ottoman's cushion is the same color and material as the chair.

Eero Aarnio truly is a remarkable designer. It would be an honor to be the owner of a ball chair. The chair will most likely increase in value over the years, making it a great investment.
